Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO)

FOGO = Food Organics and Garden Organics

FOGO covers all the organic waste usually generated at home in the kitchen and the garden. Things like food scraps and grass clippings are obvious, however it also includes things like greasy cardboard and shredded paper.

FOGO collection helps divert food and organic waste from your red rubbish bin which saves space in your rubbish bin, reduces the amount (and cost) of landfill needed and reduces your carbon footprint.

At the end of 2024, the District Council of Grant commenced a free FOGO kerbside service trial for residents in Nene Valley, Port MacDonnell and the rural living area stretching from Crafter Road, Compton through to Kilsby Road, OB Flat. The trial aim was to collect data on the feasibility of providing an ongoing FOGO service to residents across the district with participation rates, load contamination information and service costs helping to inform Council leading into the next budget period and shape a potential service.

Based on the trial data, Council approved an ongoing opt-in service in the above areas.

In November 2025, a second service trial began in the areas of Tarpeena, Allendale, Yahl, Kongorong and Racecourse Bay. Following the success of this second trial, Council has extended the ongoing opt-in service to these areas, which will continue to have access to the FOGO service free of charge until 30 June 2026.

2026-2027 Bin Tags

From July 1 2026, residents wishing to continue using the service will be required to purchase a FOGO tag for the 2026/2027 financial year. The annual service fee is set at $90.

Upon payment, property owners will receive an identification tag to attach to the handle of the Council-issued bin with a lime green lid. This tag enables the Council contractor to easily idenity bins for collection along the service route.

Tags can be purchased and collected in the following ways:

  • Phone: District Council of Grant Principal Office on (08) 8721 0444 or Port MacDonnell Community Complex on (08) 8738 3000. Upon request, staff will arrange for payment over the phone and a tag to be posted to you or set aside for collection from the Office.
  • In person: Present at either the Principal Office at 324 Commercial Street West, Mount Gambier or Port MacDonnell Community Complex at 5-7 Charles Street, Port MacDonnell to make payment and collect a tag.
Opt In to the Service

Those who did not participate in the trial but are now opting in to the service, please indicate this to staff and the delivery of a 240L bin with a lime green lid will be arranged.
