Southern Limestone Coast Council is promoting creativity and connection with a special program of community events in recognition of Mental Health Month this October.

Three events for different age groups will be held throughout the month, aligning with the 2026 Mental Health Month theme of ‘Find Your Way to Wellbeing’.

Southern Limestone Coast Council Mayor Kylie Boston said the program supports community wellbeing in practical and inclusive ways, from encouraging creative expression to making space for honest conversations about mental health.

“These activities give our community a chance to engage with mental health in a different way and start thinking about what wellbeing means to them, whether that’s making time for yourself, trying something new, or checking in with friends and family,” said Mayor Boston.

The program starts on Wednesday 7 October 2026 with a film screening of Wonder at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex to align with the Spring school holidays. Aimed at children aged 10 and over and their families, the screening is a meaningful moment to reflect on acceptance, kindness and the impact of bullying. Guests are invited for pizza, refreshments and conversation from 2:00pm before the film begins at 2:30pm. Wonder is rated PG.

For youth and young adults aged 16 and over, suicide prevention charity The Shaka Project will host a mental health workshop at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on Wednesday 14 October from 6:00pm. The session focuses on lived experience and challenging stigma and stereotypes, providing practical tools and resources to help young people talk about mental health challenges in their community.

The program will conclude on Sunday 25 October 2026 with a creative workshop exploring the slow art practice of acrylic pour. Hosted at the Donovan’s Community Centre from 10:30am, the workshop offers an opportunity to be creative, ease stress, and build confidence in a welcoming and quiet environment. The workshop is suitable for all community members aged 16 and over with morning tea provided.

All events are free with bookings essential. For more information and to book a spot, contact the Southern Limestone Coast Council Community Development team on 08 8738 3000.

This program of events was made possible with funding from the Mental Health Coalition of SA and Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network and in partnership with the Southern Limestone Coast Council.
