Correction 20/10/2026: The Citizen of the Year category is open to all Australian citizens above the age of 18 rather than 30.
Southern Limestone Coast Council is seeking nominations for the annual Citizen of the Year Awards, celebrating the unsung heroes in our community.
The awards are conducted in partnership with the Australia Day Council of South Australia and shine a spotlight on the contributions of individuals, groups and events that make a positive impact on local community life.
Southern Limestone Coast Council Mayor Kylie Boston encouraged residents to consider their friends, family and neighbours whose dedication and service to the community may go unnoticed.
“The Citizen of the Year Awards are an opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable people across our district who put others before themselves and go above and beyond for the benefit of our community,” Mayor Boston said.
“Whether their contribution is through volunteering, sport, the arts, education, local events or lending a hand when it’s needed, nominating is a great way to celebrate their efforts and say thank you.”
Nominations are invited across four categories:
- Citizen of the Year (30 years and over on 26 January 2027)
- Young Citizen of the Year (Between 16 and 30 years old on 26 January 2027)
- Community Event of the Year
- Award for Active Citizenship.
Nominees must be Australian citizens with the exception of the Award for Active Citizenship category which is open to all community members. Unsuccessful nominees from previous years are also welcome to be renominated.
Council’s 2026 Citizen of the Year Award recipient Cary Jennings said being nominated was a meaningful reminder of the impact of community service.
“Receiving the award was a real honour, and it also reflected all the people who work together to make our community stronger. You don’t get these awards unless you have great people behind you,” Mr Jennings said.
“If you know someone who gives their time or shares their skills, it’s worth putting in a nomination. Taking a few minutes to tell their story can mean a great deal.”
Nominations close at 5pm on 20 November 2026. Submissions can be made online via citizenoftheyear.com.au, and hard copy nomination forms are also available at Council’s Principal Office and the Community Complex at Port MacDonnell.
Award recipients and nominees will be recognised at a private ceremony on 26 January 2027.
